Malta impressions

Mellieha

Mellieha is one of the oldest villages in Malta, situated in the North-Western part of the island, and has been inhabited since the early Neolithic period. In fact, some megalithic remains, tombs and pottery were found in various locations around the village. Further proof to its long history is the name of the village, which is derived from the Semitic word for salt, and probably refers to ancient Punic and Roman salt terns that might have been located adjacent to Mellieha bay (also known as Ghadira).

Mellieha is a popular tourist destination during the summer months, although much of village life remains intact during this period, unlike other touristy villages such as Bugibba and Qawra. Under British colonization, Mellieha flourished and grew in size rapidly which was owed to incentives offered through leases. The area had been abandoned for around two centuries, out of fear of attack of corsairs and the Saracens. Despite its growth, Mellieha remains a relatively quiet village, hosting large villas and being a popular place for foreigners who decide to settle in Malta.

One of the most fascinating areas in this locality is the Ahrax tal-Mellieha, a barren expanse of garigue on the north-eastern tip of the island. This arid plain is not only valuable for its flora and fauna, some of it endemic, but also for the fortifications and chapel that are built there.

The Afirax Tower is one of the thirteen coastal towers built by Grand Master De Redin as coastline fortifications. Designed in a square shape and consisting of two rooms on each other, and a smaller one on the roof, The Afirax Tower, or White Tower as it is more popularly called, was built in 1658 and manned by the local militia. Other fortifications include a number of redoubts while nearby is a chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

The festa (or village feast) of Mellieħa is held in honour of Our Lady of Victories. The festa starts on August 30 and culminates on September 8, commemorating the repelling of the Great Siege in 1565 (also a national public holiday). The Great Siege refers to the victory the Maltese people had over the Ottomans in 1565, with the help of the Knights of Malta.
